Polska muzyka i polscy kompozytorzy - Polish Music and Polish Composers

Polish music is well known in the world. There has been a number of composers and musicians who have helped this happen. Fryderyk Chopin is the best known Polish composer. This great 19th century artist mixed elements of folk and classical music. Other famous Polish composers are Karol Szymanowski and Mieczyslaw Karlowicz. The former modeled himself on Frederyk Chopin, and his music was influenced by Western European music, eastern culture and the folklore of Podhale. After 1945, Witold Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki and Mikolaj Gorecki, the author of the Symphony no 3, were among the most outstanding composers of classical music. Also Polish jazzmen have achieved a very high position as, for example, Michal Urbaniak or Krzysztof Komeda. Film music is yet another field in which Polish composers have had important achievements. We all know Wojciech Kilar, the author of the music in Dracula, Zbigniew Preisner, who composed backgrounds to Kieslowski films, Michal Lorentz or Janusz Kaminski. They are popular not only in Poland, but also all over the world. In pop music two artists have reached a great success. The first one is Barbara Trzetrzelewska, known as Basia. The other one is Edyta Górniak, who received the second prize at the Eurovision Festival a few years ago. Others who have represented Poland at this festival were Anna Maria Jopek and Mieczysław Szczęśniak.

Among the most popular groups and singers of the sixties and the seventies are Andrzej Dąbrowski, Halina Kunicka, Skaldowie, Dwa plus jeden and Czerwone gitary. Many of their songs are still considered to be great hits. Other groups that keep on attracting new fans, and gained popularity in the eighties, are Budka Suflera and Lady Pank. Polish folk groups, such as Slask and Mazowsze are also worth mentioning.

Many famous concerts and festivals are held in Poland, e.g., the Chopin Festival or song festivals in Sopot and Opole.

In conclusion we can say that Polish music, Polish composers and performers have made an important contribution to world music. Names, such as Chopin or Penderecki are always associated with our country.
