Dzieła wybranego polskiego pisarza - The works of a Polish writer of your choice

I consider Witold Gombrowicz to be one of the most prominent writers of the 20th century. He was born on 4th August 1904 in Maloszyce. After having studied law, he devoted himself to writing. He made his debut in 1933. It was a volume of short stories entitled Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania (An adolescent's diary). In 1937 his first novel was published Ferydurke or Thirty door key. It is an extraordinary book, a grotesque journey into the world of 'pupa' and 'gęba'. It is a tragic journey because the world turns out to be dominated by the so-called Form, and is dead and fossilized. According to Witold Gombrowicz a man is never himself because others impose a specific model of conduct on him, that is to say 'a Form'. However, ignoring 'a Form' is not possible because released from one form we fall into another. The world is nothing but a place full of props of 'a Form' - ready patterns, conventions, stereotypes and models. Moreover, Gombrowicz proved one more time since William Shakespeare that the world is a stage and all humans are actors. The message of 'Thirty door key' is a desire:

"Niech mój kształt rodzi się ze mnie,
niech nie będzie zrobiony mi..."
"Let my shape be born of me,
Let it not be made for me..."

Apart from 'Thirty door key' Witold Gombrowicz wrote Iwona, księżniczka Burgunda (Yvonne, princess of Burgunda) - a drama about human's lot, Opetani (Possessed), Trans-Atlantic and Wedding. His last novel were Cosmos and Operetta. He died in 1969.

Nowadays Witold Gombrowicz is considered to be a classic. His artistic creativity does not arise so much emotions as it used to in the period between the two world wars, the time of the revival of the realistic novel. He is the father of avant-garde literature; he brings up questions about life. His books have been translated into several languages. He became successful all over the world. In 1967 he received an International Publisher Literary Prize (Prix Formentor).

Witold Gombrowicz , a writer of inexhaustible possibilities, started a new trend in Polish literature.
